GENERAL INFORMATION

United Kingdom is a democratic country with a very open and welcoming approach to other nationalities visiting its shores. United Kingdom was one of the first countries to open its borders to migrant workers from A8 states. Research suggests that a total of around of 1 million people have moved from new member states to the UK. To help you understand and appreciate some of the UK customs and laws we have provided you with some guidelines.

  • Always carry some form of identification for cases of emergency.

  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be returning.

  • Use only public or work provided toilets. The use of hedge-rows or any public places as toilets is illegal in the UK and might lead to prosecution and fines.

  • In the UK there are СCTV cameras on most streets and in all supermarkets and shops. If you are caught shop lifting or stealing you will be prosecuted.

  • Drinking of beer, cider, spirits or any other form of alcohol in public places is against the law in the UK.

  • Dropping of litter is also illegal. Please put all your rubbish in the bins.

  • Carrying weapons of any type including knives is a serious legal offence. If caught and convicted you may be imprisoned.

  • Possessing, using or selling recreational or other types of drugs may result in a prison sentence or deportation.

  • In the countryside roadways are narrow. It is advisable in normal circumstances to walk facing the traffic so you can see the traffic coming and if necessary you can take evasive action to avoid accidents. Please note that in the UK cars are driven on the left hand side of the road.

  • Bicycles are also ridden on the left side of the road. High visibility jackets and helmets must be worn. It is illegal to ride a bicycle on the pavement or public walkway.

  • Hitch hiking is not publicly acceptable in the UK. Although hitch hiking can be harmless it does have its dangers and can be a nuisance to some drivers. It is always better to use public transport such as buses and taxis.

  • Most land in the UK is privately owned and it is an offence to trespass.

  • Fishing is regulated by fishing rights.

We hope this information will help you to avoid any awkward situations in the UK.
